Foof's journey to picking a tailor was done on Style Forum back in 2007 & early 2008. He had picked Caraceni in Rome...but ultimately opted to use Rubinacci & Ambrosi (along with Anna M. for shirts) in Naples

Ambrosi is relatively unique, solo pantelone. I say that as a compliment and customer. I don't know Caraceni, Rubinacci, or Anna M. other than by reputation. It seems to me that Caraceni is rather businesslke, without the handholding and foreplay of the Neaopolitans. I like that straightforward approach and follow thru described by Dopey. None of the delays or confusion some of us have experienced with these long distance commissions.

Would you say the broken bone is a suit only fabric? Would you wear it as an odd jacket? If so, with what trousers?

My opinion, as an owner of the "plain" Solaro suiting and the larger herringbone "Solaro" is that only the "plain" pattern works as odd trousers, anything else is strictly a suiting combination.

Yours is a tough question to answer. I think the configuration I ordered, the DB coat is better off as a suit. To really work as a sportcoat, a DB in this cloth ought to have patch pockets, maybe even be 4x2 with a breast patch pocket. Otherwise, the clean, hard finish is a little too slick for a sportcoat. Think of the Solaro as a plain weave or gabardine. Sportcoats from those kinds of cloth struggle to create enough contrast with the trousers to look right.
If I wanted to use a Solaro coat as a separate, I think a strong contrast color like a French blue or burgundy would be best, maybe even a check.

But as Dr. T says, I think the trousers can be used easily with a coat of a different cloth.

Dear Loungers

I will be in Rome foro about one week in November. I am not sure if that is enough time to have a suite madre by a good tailor, but I would like to try.

I have seen the thread on Caraceni. Do you have other suggestions? How is Rubinacci in Rome? If bespoke is not possible because of time constraints, is there any good MTM that you know?
