When I was poor and without a shop [much like I am now] Mr. Grodd let me use his workroom for 6 months. He was Old School. F.Shattuck..

From the NYT obituary:
"'I abhor dullness and resist flamboyance,” Mr. Grodd told The New York Times in 1985.

This seems to be a near-perfect summation of good taste.
