NY Times blog entry on Tweed Rides . . . .

For those who might have missed it, today's Times has this piece (with numerous photos) on a green trend. There seems to be a good deal of Chappish irony displayed by some participants but my impression is that it's underpinned by a renewed appreciation of the traditional artisanship of tweeds. Whether or not one feels any affinity for the wilder nouveau-retro styles, let's hope the trend thrives if it helps the industry survive. Perhaps Simon A might want to find out who sponsors these rides if he needs product-testing and marketing help for his Caucasian tweed project.

Does anyone have a good definition of Tweed?

I'm still not sure what constitutes Tweed: is it geography, or being made on a handloom or....?

We at the Guvnor Owners' Club most certainly approve of such things. It's worth noting that this trend began in London, at the forum of London Fixed-Gear Single-Speed.

I'm sure there is chappish irony as you suggest, and a streak of timely fashionability. Despite this, the surprising-to-some suitability of tweed for this purpose has probably helped shake off its lay-association with ageing professors.
