Hi,...I'm in the process of chosing buttons for three different suits. Am I correct in thinking that horn is the classiest? Also,....is horn always a matt finish ....and is this the best choice? .....My suits are from a H&S Perrenial b&w pow-- button-2--sb ; a dugdale brown & cream dogstooth-button 2 3-piece ;...and a brown chalkstripe double breasted..
Any advice.......thanks?

Dear Rowly:

Horn buttons are usually the best choice, after all, Oxxford Clothes stresses the use of them. The suits sound like they're going to turn out great, please post some photos when you get a chance.

Let your eyes make the choice. Lay out various horn buttons on swatches of your fabrics to see which complement the various cloths. Horn buttons can have a matte finish or a polished finish. Which is the best choice depends upon the fabric. Some buttons have two holes, others have four holes. I like four buttonholes for longevity, and I like them to stand up straight. Chances are your tailor will have a good range of buttons on hand. If not, take your swatches and go button hunting at a specialist, not the internet.
