NJS.
Hmm... The problem with the electorates is big shiny Rolex and quirks a la Sarkozy, not so much well-fitting discreet clothes, I think.
Indeed. If Obama dressed simple, in clothes that actually fit him, he'd be fine. He doesn't HAVE to wear a pocket square or anything, although that would be nice.

I find that my friends can't tell when someone is wearing clothes that fit them perfectly, but they still react positively to it (if that makes any sense). Ask them to say which one is wearing bespoke and which one isn't and they'd go, "Uhhh..." but usually they'll get a better feeling from the guy wearing bespoke nonchalantly over the guy wearing the RTW, super-waisted coat, skinny fit trouser suit.

I understand you to mean that your friends don't notice (or care) that clothes do not fit but that if they do fit, they appreciate it.

Basically, yes. I think it's a subconscious thing.

This is a profound observation that brings up the esoteric subject of the universal character of true beauty and harmony, which is instinctively recognizable by all humans. It is not all a matter of acquired taste, education and culture - something is seeded in us. The same mechanism is at work when we know someone is playing or singing out of tune a melody we never heard before.
