Ozwald Boateng

LL posters in the UK may have seen the tv documentary on Ozwald Boateng last night.

The theme running through this was how Boateng has strived to be the "English Armani", combining tailoring with fashion etc., the programme ending with an interview by Boateng of his hero Armani.

Of more interest to LL posters would have been the interviews with Mr. Hitchcock at A&S and with Andrew Ramroop at Maurice Sedwell, both of whom visibly bristled at the suggestion that the Row should "move with the times" and similar. Sadly these interviews were too short but did include some interesting discussion of drape at A&S and of silhouette construction (accompanied by deft chalk sketches) at MS.

Is there anyway to see this show on the web now?

I think the comment of Boateng that he would like to be the new Armani comes through in his designs; it’s a style for those who “want to be.” A&S and Maurice Sedwell are designs for those who are already there. It’s a big difference. For those who “want to look” like a “want to be” there are an awful lot of choices in the market and Boateng has competition.

After seeing Armani’s yacht in Sicily this summer, I would like to be the English Armani as well, or the French Armani, American Armani, heck the Mesopotamian Armani would work too! Goodness, what an undignified comment.

PS No the yacht came right into a small harbor near the Marina di Ragusa with all its, all male pinup crew. And Armani own a good chunk of Sicily on the island of Pantelleria.

This is supposed to be true - called by the potential victims 'wrecking' and called, euphemistically, by the protagonists, 'salvage'. I am sure that no one ever admitted to participation. There are some terrible stories about it - including tales of the ship-wrecked sailors struggling to shore just to be murdered and buried in the sand above high tide mark by those seeking the 'bounty' of the sea. However, to balance that, there are the wonderful accounts too of the volunteer lifeboat crews in that part of the world.

I thought Ozwald came across incredibly badly - seemingly unable to form anything approaching constructive or meaningful opinion, managing to fill an hour with vague allusions to "vibe", "energy" and "spirit"..

I think this put the all-too-brief interviews with Messrs Hitchcock, Ramroop and Allen in an excellent light as they actually had something of substance to say!

Ooh... I am afraid that very much depends on the audience. I like Camus's description of the absurd as a deaf man trying to understand what people are doing on a dance ring, unable to hear or imagine the music. Perhaps he feels the "vibe" and mistakes it for the music, convinced that the others must be experiencing the same thing.
