I am looking for a good quality medium grey sharkskin cloth in the 13 oz or higher range. I have seen the grey shark in the Lessers 13 oz book, but it is so dull and lifeless. I really like the grey sharks in the Lessers 11/12 oz book, but I would prefer a heavier weight. I have looked at the sharks in the Smiths 13 oz book; they are OK, but not to the refined standard of those in the Lessers 11/12 oz book. Does anyone have a recommendation? If not, I will likely choose between one from the Smiths 13 oz book or one from the Lessers 11/12 oz book.

Thank you.

The Lesser sharkskin is deadly dull. Try Harrison's or Wain Shiell (cannot remember which) in 13oz.

The Harrison's Thistle book is 13 oz. worsted, and has some good sharks.

Bry2000, buy them both!

I bought the Smith's 3801 (13oz light-medium grey) and the Lesser's 29934 (11/12oz) in a true medium grey. I agree that the Lesser's 29764 13oz is an uninspiring colour...

I probably have one of the older Lesser 13 ozs SS. It is a mid grey on the light side of the spectrum and very handsome. I have not taken a look at the books recently to give you any opinion on the current offering. It might be wise too look at Lesser's 16 ozs as well.

I do have 3 SS suits made from Smith's 14 ozs Steadfast bunch and one from their 13 ozs. book. All are in mid-gray. The Smiths is not as refined a finish as the Lesser and that is why I prefer it. There are some worsted patterns where texture (as in flannels and tweeds) is so important and the SS is one of them. If you refine a SS too much, you take the interest out of it.

The LBD Oyster 13 ozs is one of my favorite books. The SS in the book are very rugged, one step removed from the Smith's. This is clearly not the type of cloth you seek, but it tempts me a great deal.

The Scabal 13 ozs is a bit mundane when compared to the above referenced fabrics.

I am not sure what Holland & Sherry has left in heavy fabrics with the demise of their 14 ozs book. The Perennial in 13 ozs might be worth a look.

I don't mind the Lesser 16oz medium Grey sharkskin (29602).

I agree, the finish is refined, but it is what I want in a suit for business.

I rather like the Dorchester range from Hardy. They have a couple of great pick and picks. Here is the 14 Oz medium grey:

I have a sample of a similar design in a darker shade. It has is very noticeably a two tone weave, giving a freshly ground salt and pepper type of look. The contrast in the threads is much stronger than on most pick and picks.

Most recent heavier purchases have been in the Smith 14oz. Lesser 16oz is also nice-looking (with more character than the lighter ones from them), but could be awfully hot.

Hardy Dorchester has two batches-- one quite rustic, almost a Donegal appearance--- and another more conventional. I'm still breaking in a suit from another Dorchester fabric and don't know yet how I feel about it.

For another take on the problem, look at the 14oz hopsack from Smith. Darker than mid-grey, but makes a really nice suit.

Lesser has, or had, what I thought was a quite dynamic sharkskin among the 13oz range (2766 maybe?). I am sure I have a suit made from Lesser's 16 oz cloth in the lighter sharkskin patten which is much more subdued than the 13 oz options I recall. I am not an authority on Smith's (or any other) cloth but I would make sure your tailor has shown you all of Lesser's 13 oz range before giving up on them for the cloth you want.

I'm sorry Concordia, my post wasn't meant to answer your question, it was just a suggestion for a cloth for Bry2000.
