Matt, that's a great look.

I've never worn ascots, myself, but I've seen several people in Paris and abroad wearing Hermes scarves, so if you were thinking of doing likewise as your post indicated, then by all means, go for it. Their colours are very vibrant and I've always found they give off a nice, subtly saturated feel.

Although I am usually to be found n a suit which requires a tie i do love to wear a Cravat. Worn with Moleskins or Cords or possibly a pair of bespoke tweed trousers and a jacket the effect can look rather smashing!!

What you are calling ascots here are known, eastward, across the pond, as cravats when worn inside the shirt; when outside, they are known as stocks. The way many Brits wear a cravat is just to tie it like a four-in-hand but without the final tuck-through and haul it up quite high, spreading it out with wrinkles along the top edge; one or two buttons on the shirt can be left undone. Stock knots are varied and complex.

I really couldn't imagine wearing an ascot outside the shirt. Opening the second button of a shirt to display more ascot seems a little to "stagey" for me, unless perhaps the second button was quite high. (And I am not averse to a touch of flamboyance!) I note that in the recent movie "The Last King of Scotland" Idi Amin is portrayed as quite frequently wearing ascots with the shirt open to display a lot of ascot.
Yes, same here.. always inside my shirt, but also i tend NOT to have the second button undone..
