I personally prefer a patterned silk square that blends into the overcoating while contrasting with it. So it's there if you look but your eye doesn't stop on it.

We have mostly discussed pocket squares of solid colours (maybe with an edging) of linen or cotton, and printed silks, but what is the general attitude towards pocket squares that are tone on tone? I have a few in ultrafine cotton and linen in white, pale blue, and pearl grey in herringbone, and diamond weaves?

My "standard issue" plain white pocket squares are made from a fine herringbone textured cotton - they have a nice dense hand to them, and I think they hold a puff fold better than a lot of white silk squares I own.

Nick M, are yours Swiss? My herringbones and diamond weaves are a bit larger... so one does clearly see the weave.

The cotton is... Italian, if I remember correctly. I had some shirts made up in the fabric, and the maker was nice enough to cut me some pocket squares gratis.

Nick M, that sounds like a good idea.... now if you could only find someone to stitch the edges for you..! Maybe try doing it yourself..... Where did you get your shirts made?

One of those hole-in-the-wall Hong Kong tailors, but quite a good one.

I'm sure I'll move up in the bespoke world eventually, but right now, they provide all the features I want...

Matching tie and pocket square is gauche, but what's the consensus on matching shirt and pocket square?

Occasionally in the past, I've worn patterned shirt, contrasting pocket square in the suit breast pocket, and pocket square matching the shirt in the overcoat pocket. I think it works quite nicely, especially since I'm only wearing the overcoat out of doors.

Personally, I don't like things to match (except socks). I would rather that the pocket square reflect some colors in the shirt or tie, or else contrast in a complementary way; e.g., blue and white tie with a dark red square.

I kind of like the idea of having a square in the overcoat that matches the shirt but the square in the jacket pocket that contrasts with the tie and is not matched to the shirt

I tried it with the neapoliitan shirts I got from orlando-they make matching squares. it was sort of flash but I liked it
