Could anyone recommend a reliable alteration tailor in central to west London? I think I've tried everyone local, have had many items butchered, and I am sick of the regrets! Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I realise that this is a very boring thread, but if anyone has some good information then they may send me a private message and I should be very grateful. It is rather urgent. Apologies again.

There are lots of alteration tailors in Soho (Kingley Street), working for many of the Regent Street stores; but I’m afraid, couldn’t recommend anyone in particular.

When the SR houses need alterations, they use outworker (freelance) tailors specialising in alterations. These people do not have a shopfront. I do not know any names because I always had everything arranged via Poole. All I can suggest is to call up Poole or Dege or whichever other SR house you may know and ask them for a referral.

If you fail, please let me know and I will try to ask around.

No 26 Kingly Street is packed full of self-employed tailors. They used to all be based on Carnaby Street but were moved out when their building was re-developed. I have used one there for some work and it seems fine (Franco; on the first floor). As a new member I hesitate to make a recommendation, but perhaps others know someone based in the building that they can recommend.

Thanks everyone. I will investigate all those options. I must say that the 'get your own sewing machine' idea is seeming more and more sensible too, as it is difficult to find people willing to devote the same care as you yourself would.

I always use a chap just off South Molton Street. He's called M Mandalia (I think) and is very good - I had a vintage suit that I inherited from my grandfather taken in all over and it looks great (I get stopped in shops and complimented on it). If you walk down South Molton Street with your back to Oxford Street there are little passages on the right. He's generally got a sandwich board outside but it's the second one I think (going down next to Browns if I remember correctly) and he's in a little doorway on the left.

His number is 020 7629 4021

Good luck!

Depends on what sort of alterations you want done. When I want something changed I usually just take it back to my tailor on the Row. However, if it is delicate fine tuning of something, Brian Russell does an excellent job. He can fix overly crooked or straight coats and anything else you can think of. Plus, the man is an outstanding tailor of the A&S tradition.

Do the SR tailors take alterations (coat) in general?

Tony the tailor (his real name is Antonio and his surname escapes me). Works in a basement on Clifford Street and does alterations and work for a few Savile Row tailors. 020 7734 7380.
