Kenneth Clark was one of the 20th Century’s most celebrated art critics. He was a director of the National Gallery at the age of 30 and was knighted only 4 years later.
As a very young boy I was absolutely transfixed by his television series “Civilisation”. His presentation style made a huge impression on me. Looking back at some youtube episodes I am also struck by fit of his clothes. No doubt he worked among equally well turned out colleagues, but I do love the way that his clothes play a silent part in his performances : immaculate but in no way cutting across what he was talking about.
