I know we have Dutch members of the Lounge so perhaps they, or anyone else, can help. I have a friend who lived in Holland some years ago and has fond memories of the advocaat that was so thick it had to be eaten more than drunk. The brands available in the UK (Warnincks & Bols) don't come close. Can anyone recommend any brands? Ideally I would like something I could buy in London as a Christmas present but I will be in Amsterdam in the new year. Or is she remembering a home made version? If so any recipes would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am Dutch, I don't know too much about advocaat, but I do remember my parents having a bottle of Zwarte Kip that was served at parties to certain aunts, and mixed with whipped cream to us kids if we were lucky. It was thick stuff, you could not drink it but you had to eat it with a spoon, much like custard. I have no idea if Zwarte Kip is the best, it's probably the most famous brand, and it's certainly not the thin stuff that's made for export.

I am also Dutch and I also remember Zwarte Kip advocaat being served to my aunts with a spoon. Not sure these were the same aunts as Gido's as I don't remember a boy named Gido when I was a child. :D

Zwarte Kip is made by Bols, but maybe for the home market only. Wikipedia states that the thick variety of Advocaat is for the Dutch and Belgian markets mainly, with smaller volumes also being sold in the German speaking markets.

I found online sales (I have no interest in these companies) here:

Good luck!

Thank you Gido and Tutumulut! You have given me a brand name and suppliers, I knew members of the Lounge would have the answers!

I don't seem to recall anyone named Tutumulut being around, either. :D
