This past weekend belonged to Allan Pettersson and the Symphony No. 7, his best opus by far. Terrifying and ethereal at the same time. A masterpiece. I believe it would be an important discovery for those who are not familiar with his work.

Yma Sumac! The exotic five octaves of range. One of my mother's favorites; it took me a while to appreciate her.
Thank you for bringing her up.

Your mother and I have a shared taste. Amy Camus is also one of my favorites!

I guess she could perfectly transpose every single note from end to beginning

Sartorial swing: If, like me, you grew up knowing Mel Tormé only as that square crooner of "The Christmas Song," it's worth revisiting that view to discover one of the most sophisticated jazz and cabaret singers of mid-century America. From perhaps his finest album, 1960's Mel Tormé Swings Shubert Alley (incidentally one of the best, and best-recorded, jazz albums ever—Marty Paich's tight band included Art Pepper) comes this number that might be a candidate for forum theme song; "All I Need Is a Girl".

Claudio Monteverdi: Sì dolce è 'l tormento (1624).
Roberta Invernizzi with instrumental ensemble;
Silvia Frigato with a more intimate harp accompaniment;
Paolo Fresu and Uri Caine in a tasteful jazzy version.
So sweet is the torment
in my breast
that happily do I live
for cruel beauty.
In the heaven of beauty
let cruelty grow
and mercy be lacking:
for my faith will always
be as a rock,
in the face of pride.

Let deceitful hope
turn away from me,
let neither joy nor peace
descend on me.
And let the wicked girl
whom I adore
deny me the solace
of sweet mercy:
amid infinite pain,
amid hope betrayed,
my faith will survive.

The hard heart
that stole mine away
has never felt love’s flame.
The cruel beauty
that charmed my soul
withholds mercy,
so let it suffer,
repentant and languishing, and
let it sigh one day for me.

I bet you don´t see many dinner suits worn with a cable knit (I believe, Aran) turttle neck, do you?.
Don´t let that sartorial obscenity distract you from listening to this exquisite slow-tempo rendition of what many consider to be the turning point into modern classical music.

Dear Hectorm,

if there would be a competition on how to ignore conventions most gracefully, Mr Bernstein would make the finale :D

Cheers, David
