LX

At 27 I wished for a new motorcycle, a SS Submariner like Belmondo wore, a new set of golf clubs, and an athletic, fair haired, lovely, young companion.

Of all those things so ardently wished for, I only miss the blond ...

If you want your brother to have a friend, get him a dog!

His girlfriend's cat (who has him quite whipped... the cat, not the girlfriend.... or perhaps both) might object. haha. Although he was soppy about our dog growing up (that was and will always be technically his). Freddie's collar still hangs on his bedroom door at our parents' home.

The leatherman would be a good idea... if we weren't from a sailing family and all got given them when we were younger (I agree though... so useful. I carry mine around in my grandmother's little black Hermes constance handbag and am forever getting surprised glances when i'm the one to produce the screwdriver/knife/bottle opener/pliers on demand. Evidently I don't project 'practical'.)

That puppy is melting me.

When I turned 20, a girlfriend told me we were going to a lunch near Cambridge. We got off the train, got a cab, and instead of depositing us at the expected countryside pub, it was at a skydiving site. It was a great surprise and loads of fun, and something I've continued to do, not to mention as memorable as anything I've ever done. If your brother hasn't tried this before, and you think his personality would suit, then it might be worth consideration. I am sure there are a few sites near Paris.

Michael, out of curiosity's sake, what kind of bike did you ask for? I have been pressing/begging for a chrome Royal Enfield Bullet 350, but as no one who cares about me enough to give such a large present believes I would stay alive kicking around NYC on a motorcycle, I am coming to think it will have to be a gift to myself instead.

OK, how about a good watercolour travelling set? Or an extravagant silk dressing gown like the ones they sell in New and Lingwood?

If he is a skier and sailor he may not appreciate the skydiving. I am a skier and sailor, and prefer to be in charge of my own destiny in dangerous situations!

I am a sailor as well. Reminds me I need to have Pauline make me a bespoke skippers hat.
