Vassilis, be warned! - a friend of mine got in the loop for a week with this tune (the interpretation is sensational, not even Piazzola was so good at it). The good news is - it cured him of his sadness
Costi , too late (even when you wrote it ) for warnings ..I 've been in your friends position for the last week , It did not cure me from sadness but it did brought up a lot of my passion !
Vassilis, you must be on the right path. I don't believe in listening to happy music when we are sad, to "change" our mood - it doesn't work that way. On the contrary, music can help go deeper, like a diver who needs to touch the bottom with his feet, so he can push against it full force towards the surface. Now, that the passion is consummated, phase two: regaining inner peace amid the turmoil of the world.

Excellent choice NJS. Don't put your daughter on the stage !

Over the past few days I have been switching between Mildred Bailey and Angela Gheorghiu.

Yes, Greece is going through hell. It will come back. In the meanwhile, reggae sounds good, doesn't it, the music of yearning and justice.
I hope you are right uppercase (the coming back part) ..not a lot of people beleive that right now , but I'm with you and yes reggae is where I mostly look for inspiration these days ..
Vassilis
To paraphrase Churchill, If you're going through hell, keep going. Keep on trucking, brother Yialabis.

To NJS, I do like Winehouse (and Ella) as well, and her death at 27 was a real tragedy for this talented singer.

I understand that the British coroner recently said that the official cause of her death was "death by misadventure". She apparently had 5x the legal driving limit of alcohol in her body: 400 milligrams vs. 80, being the legal limit for driving. I suppose 400 mgs. is around 12 shots of hard liquor in quick succession though she is a slight girl, perhaps less. A real loss.

Here, it is a rainy, cold, generally miserable, gloomy day, a harbinger of things to come for months and months. On such days, it is sometimes nice to rub in the misery and listen to a depressing song, particularly with mystical lyrics I can't understand and so here's Leonard Cohen's Suzanne:

Today is dedicated to Sofia Gubaidulina's Offertorium:

http://youtu.be/Da1IEaAYfwk

It is not clear who is playing here in this performance, it could well be Kremer. My two favourite interpretations are with Oleg Kagan under the direction of G Rozhdestvenky from 1982 and, more analytical and differentiated, Gidon Kremer with the Boston Symphony under Charles Dutoit (1989).

Gubaidulina turned 80 last Monday Oct 24. The greatest Russian composer after Shostakovitch probably, very expressive and deeply spiritual. Nice article on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sofia_Gubaidulina

Uppercase - yes a great loss. I never heard her singing until after she died, having (wrongly) assumed, from her appearance and tattooes, that Amy Winehouse was some kind of punk rocker. What a surprise to hear her voice!

Today, to cheer me up over an objectionable neighbour, this from 1951, a year before Gertrude Lawrence died, the song that she introduced in 1926:

Gertrude Lawrence didn't have an especially good voice but I think she brings something very touching to this song, which Amy Winehouse and Ela even with their better voices, miss. Those who saw GL live on the stage said that she lit it up and Noel Coward could not trust himself to attend her funeral.

I couldn't agree more .. you can not avoid feelings or phases of life and music is there to walk next to you through those phases by emphasizing the feeling , making sure you will go through ..the whole of it ,creating strong associations that will one day remind you of the hard times(especially) you went through and feel you up with gratitude for having gone through them ..!
To paraphrase Churchill, If you're going through hell, keep going. Keep on trucking, brother Yialabis.
It's hard ,but it does give us the unique sense of meaning that one can only find in fighting for life ..My generation was deprived from that meaning when growing up ..It's time to see what we do with it .
This one smells and feels of Greece the way she always rebirths in spring ..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDffbqk7SWo by Stavros Xarhakos ..through the eyes of Tzeni Karezi .

I dug out my old Castello sea rock pipe today, but am sitting here high and dry without any pipe tobacco to smoke for God's sake!

Sucking on fumes. What a lack of proper planning.

As for musico, here's a uniquely female way to make one feel miserable: blame yourself. This will resonate with most men.

Eurythmics: Don't Ask Me Why

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqrw3_604_c

Miracle of miracles
Look what the night dragged in -
It's a pocket full of misery
And trouble on the wind
You spoiled the best years
Of your life
You took them all in vain
Now you think that you're forgiven
But you can't be born again

And you say
Why?
You say why?
You say why?
Don't ask me why -

I don't love you anymore
I don't think I ever did
And if you ever had
Any kind of love for me
You kept it all so well hid...

Promises sweet promises
You kept them from your mind
Like all the lost forgotten things
You never seemed to find
Like all the disappointments
You displayed upon your shelf
Now you've got no-one to turn to
You've got no-one but yourself

And you say
Why?
--------------------

WTH, let me add another Annie classic for good measure...

Eurythmics: Who's That Girl?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5iDKWV6Chg

The language of love
Slips from my lover's tongue
Cooler than ice cream
And warmer than the sun
Dumb hearts get broken
Just like china cups
The language of love
Has left me broken on the rocks

But there's just one thing
(Just one thing)
But there's just one thing
And I really wannna know

Who's that girl
Running around with you?
Tell me
Who's that girl
Running around with you?

The language of love
Has left me stony grey
Tongue tied and twisted
At the price I've had to pay
Your careless notions
Have silenced these emotions
Look at all the foolishness
Your lover's talk has done

I dedicate this song to the 99 percenters:

Fred Astaire: Puttin' On The Ritz

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFabjc6mFk4

Have you seen the well-to-do, up and down Park Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare, with their noses in the air
High hats and Arrowed collars, white spats and lots of dollars
Spending every dime, for a wonderful time
If you're blue and you don't know where to go to
Why don't you go where fashion sits,
Puttin' on the ritz.
Different types who wear a daycoat, pants with stripes
And cut away coat, perfect fits,
Puttin' on the ritz.
Dressed up like a million dollar trouper
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper (super duper)
Come let's mix where Rockefellers walk with sticks
Or umbrellas in their mitts
Puttin' on the Ritz

Tips his hat just like an english chappie
To a lady with a wealthy pappy (very snappy)
You'll declare it's simply topping to be there
And hear them swapping smart titbits
Puttin' on the ritz!

Very nice, Uppercase!

And once in the changing room with this beautiful lady, I would sing her this one:

despite the roses... But I cannot parade as Nana Mouskouri :D
