A unique and curmudgeonly character who created some of my favourite songs. Magic and Loss is truly lyrical.

Lou Reed's music is some of my favorite. I have fond memories of being in high school dorm rooms discovering The Velvet Underground. My wife and I played "I Found A Reason" off the album Loaded for our first dance at our wedding. He will be missed.

1649-1653. Following the Empress Maria Leopoldine's death in August the court's musical activities were suspended. Froberger left the city and travelled widely for the next four years, likely entrusted by the Emperor with some extra-musical duties in the fields of diplomacy and possibly espionage. [...] According to a pupil, after Dresden Froberger visited Cologne, Düsseldorf, Zeeland, Brabant and Antwerp; we also know that he also visited Brussels at least two times (in 1650 and 1652), London (after a disastrous voyage during which Froberger got robbed, an event he described musically in Plainte faite à Londres pour passer la mélancholie) and, most importantly, Paris (at least once, in 1652).
J.J. Froberger: Plainte faite à Londres pour passer la mélancholie.

Bertrand Russell wrote:A process which led from the amoeba to Man appeared to the philosophers to be obviously a progress-- -- though whether the amoeba would agree with this opinion is not known. [...] Evolutionism, in basing itself upon the notion of progress, which is change from the worse to the better, allows the notion of time, as it seems to me, to become its tyrant rather than its servant, and thereby loses that impartiality of contemplation which is the source of all that is best in philosophic thought and feeling. Metaphysicians, as we saw, have frequently denied altogether the reality of time.

One of the greatest maestri has left us.

Listen to his 1970 Requiem with an impressive list of soloists (Scotto, Horne, Pavarotti, Ghiaurov)

In the last few years, Claudio Abbado made history with his unique orchestra of personal friends and a Mahler cycle at the Lucerne Festival. Here is the 6th:

I want to express my gratitude to Michael Alden for pointing me to Fyodor Shalyapin. I am enjoying his singing thoroughly, what a great man. :D Thank you Michael!

A song from Bach's notebook, the pretty melody apparently comes from an aria by Stölzel,

And Charles Ives at the piano, playing his own composition,

In anticipation of the goings-on-about-town for this Friday night.
I hope at least some of you remember Art Pepper and his cool West Coast sound.

The final concert of Claudio Arrau. 1987 in Japan, with Sawallisch and the NHK orchestra, at the age of 84. The "Emperor." One small error early, and then just watch to the end. Prospero's farewell to magic.

Sooner or later I go back to modal jazz. Slow tempo in this take by Miles Davis of his classic So What?. I like it like this.
