What are LL members' favorite pipe tobaccos?

Dunhill's Latakia blends in the cans - 965, Nightcap, Oriental Mixture and the rarer Durbar. All quite good, and in the case of the first three, readily available in NYC.

I am thinking (although) I do enjoy my cigars, to take up pipe smoking again. I have not smoked since I was in college..a 'thousand years ago........... The I just smoked over the counter, regular brands. I wish to upgrade that now and I am a bit confused by the terms.Flaked or Rubbed. Would someone be so kind as to enlighten me as to the difference and/or when I start again, should I try one over the other?

Synjeco, in Switzerland , has an informative resume on the pipe tobaccos we like to smoke. You can click on Gawith & Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith to get reviews of their products. Both use 200 year old formulas and techniques in the making of their tobaccos. Especially good are the Virginia flakes.

Well, I am a new pipe smoker, but can heartily recommend G.L. Paese tobaccos being blended in Northern California. He takes an extremely artisanal approach to tobacco even discontinuing many blends when he can not find the correct quality leaves to make his blend. He both makes original new blends and tries to recreate some of the lost in the past pipe tobacco. Of special note are the Haddod's, Westminster and Odyssey blends. I am not sure that his tobacco is yet available in Europe as production is extremely limited, but the stores that Alden mentions in the US generally have some of his as well.

Late to the table as usual. I like Virginia Tobacco's 'Checkmate'. Sweet & some hint of Bourbon.

My favorites are Dunhill´s Aperitif, Gawith´s Grousemoor, GLPease Odyssey and sometimes Davidoff´s Royalty (although not as good as in the times when it was manufactured in UK). I was particularly fond of the Balkan Sobranie mixtures but they are not available any more...

Jannis, you have great taste in tobaccos. At least, I am a great fan of all of your choices. Sadly, Dunhill will not make Aperitif anymore, or so it is rumored. Davidoff's Royalty is not close to what it used to be. Odyssey is a great smoke.

If you like these then you will surely like the tobaccos blended by the Swiss Hans Schurch. Try his "Onyx" or his Balkan Sobranie replacement called "Torina."
