Custom derby shoe - should the quarters touch?

All,

On a custom (MTM rather than true bespoke though) pair of shoes, if quarters touch out of the box, are they likely to get too big over time?

Yes they will. Leather gives with wear. You want the quarters to be a centimeter or so away from touching so that when the leather stretches with wear they will come to a point where they are almost touching.
