The modern interpretation of this dress code is “city dress”; for men, a dark suit, but not a brown suit, two-or-three piece. But I've heard it mentioned that the original definition of this code implied a blue jacket paired with gray trousers. This has the ring of truth to it, but I've been unable to find a confirmation of this, nor any further elucidation of this particular style. Are any members here familiar with this (I believe largely continental European) style?

In Danish "city dress" refers to black jacket and cashmere trousers, that is, semi-formal day wear. Well, it DID refer to that combination. Today most people will probably think of a dark suit if you mention "city dress", although very few use that expression today ... :)
