Does anyone know of a good alterations tailor;
1) near chancery lane
2) who could take in a morning coat, and shorten and narrow the sleeves in 1 day, and
3) preferably wouldn't cost a fortune.
If I don't think of any other idea, I'll talk to one of the tailors in Lamb's conduit street, and ask their opinion.

In answer to my own question, I can't recommend this tailor highly enough:
Not only did this chap alter a morning coat (an Edwardian 2 button, step lapel, out of interest) coat by taking it in across the sides and the back, slimming the arms and shortening the sleeves, to such a standard that the coat could pass for bespoke for me (I might have pitched the sleeves further back - and I didn't discuss that with him), but he did it in four hours and only charged £60:

He is also a bespoke tailor, as well as doing alterations.

Great, it sounds like you were lucky to find him: competent, good-willing and honest. I think he deserves your attention - try a pair of trousers, it's always a good test. You never know when you strike gold!
