Hat Ribbon placement?

I see that the outer ribbon on hats are usually tied on the left, rather than on the right, of the crown. The Brunette got a man's hat for herself recently, and the milliner asked which side she would want the ribbon to be tied. She chose the right as a random decision. Is there a rule or convention to the orientation?

shredder - I am sure that it is left for men and right for women and see here (even if they cannot spell 'Dick Tracy'):

Sometimes (especially in modern films), of course (even with an evens chance) the Hollywood 'stars' get it wrong.

Many thanks for this, NJS. Usually, when she says, 'turn right at the next junction', one should always turn left, but it appears that she got it right this time!!

Not at all, shredder. An interesting exception to the right left rule is the hussars' busby, on which the busby-bag hangs to the right:

I suppose that it was inevitable that someone does it the other way round intentionally... This topic reminds me of the other thread about buttoning orientation: I will need to have another look at the hats worn by the Hassidim to see which side the knot is.
