I am interested to learn about the relative merits of the 3 roll 2 button placement, and the 3 roll 2.5.

Why would one chose either in preference to either a 2 or 3 button placement?

So, in conclusion, it is solely a matter of stylistic preference.

One interesting point is that the consensus from the above thread appears to be that the 3 roll 2 or 2.5 is normally used only in sports coats. I was watching Trading Places recently and Dan Ackroyd (aka Lewis Winthorp III) sports a 3 roll 2 business suit at the start of the movie. So it seems there is (or was - Trading Places being an 80s classic) an established use of the style in more formal clothing, at least in the US?

For years I had all my coats, suit coats and odd jackets made 3B. I only ever fasten the middle button and with time the lapels do roll to 2.5. I recently had a couple of 2B coats made and I have to admit that the 3B rolled to 2.5 does look more elegant; I don't know why but it does, although, as discussed in the previous thread, it doesn't look so good when the reverse of the button hole is visible from the front. So I have recently comissioned a new odd jacket in this style. The tailor is an A & S alumnus so we shall see how it turns out.

Yes, the 3B will roll given time and they somehow look the best. Do post some pictures when your AS alum has finished.
