stretching shoes

Can a cobbler stretch patent leather opera pumps? The pair I have are comfortable except for about a square inch under the bow.
This does not seem very viable as you are likely to crack the gloss or have the stitching bite into the seams. Removal of some of the lining might be a better option but it is best to give readymade shoes a good walk about the shop before buying them.
