Are sidetabs used in the place of suspenders? I am guessing you can have either one or the other, and not both on the same trouser.

Are suspenders only used for fishtails or can they also be used with regular trousers?

Thanks

Let me start by saying I am certainly not a braces expert although I do like them alot.

Side tabs can be used in conjunction with braces. Fishtail trousers are the best for braces, but by no means are the only type of trouser that can be worn with braces. As long as the trousers are being worn at one's waist, it should be fine. Others maintain that braces are not to be worn when one's trousers have belt loops. Yet, I feel that if one's coat will be buttoned anyway, then it should make no real difference.

I concur with Cordovan, though side tabs can be used without suspenders as well. A tailor who expects you to be wearing braces most of the time will probably cut the trousers loose enough so that they do not really grip the waist--the point is for the trousers to hang from the shoulders as the torso moves about.

So if you want the trousers to be usable without braces you will have to negotiate a waist fit that permits you to keep the trousers snug via the tabs (whether DAKS or D-rings). I don't think you can really optimize the cut for both braces and tabs alone, so for each pair of trousers, one or the other will look a little better.

I have braces buttons put on the inside of my suit trousers for the occasional times I'm in a braces mood, but since I usually don't wear them, I ask for a cut that fits close at the waist and stays in place with just DAKS tabs. When I do wear braces, they occasionally go more slack than they properly should because the pants are supporting themselves, but I don't find it troublesome.
