If you have to save, do it on shirts and suits, never on shoes. Why do shoes have such a holy position?

I'm uncertain but make three guesses: with care, shoes last longer than either shirts or suits; the comfort or discomfort of shoes will affect you emotionally and physically; and (newest, thanks to Storeynicholas's comments), supposedly, women pay more attention to a man's shoes than to his shirt or suit.

Because statistically many men tend do disregard shoes, viewing them as the equivalent of tyres for a car: they need to fit, but who cares about their looks. When they “dress up” and want to “look elegant”, they usually forget that a suit and tie alone (even if well chosen) do not make a man well turned-out; their inappropriate, vulgar, unpolished and worn-out (not to be mistaken for patina!) shoes betray them. But a man who wears good shoes that are appropriate to the occasion and takes good care of them will rarely be seen wearing ill-fitting or tasteless clothes.
Something similar happens with women and purses. These are indicators of good taste.

That's interesting! I must become more observant.

Good purses are expensive. Good shoes are expensive, too. Both are labelled “accessories”. Average shoes may cost a quarter of the price of good shoes, and some men believe they will wear out for pairs of shoes in the same amount of time irrespective of their price and quality (and without consideration to their own comfort and aesthetical pleasure in the meantime). There are persons who simply can’t conceive the idea of spending “so much money” on these things, so they buy cheap – which is not only poor quality, but usually includes “tasteless” as a free extra.
ELEGANT good purses are both rare AND expensive. If a woman sports one, it’s not always just a matter of affording it, but a matter of having the taste to choose it and spend whatever it costs. “God is in the details”, as Mies put it. And “less is more”, of course, which is the other one of his remarkably insightful aphorisms that we appreciate so much.

In Greece we having a saying .." cheap stuff "eat" your money " (a direct translation) . When it comes to shoes I think it makes a lot of sense.. My oldest pair of shoes at the moment is a pair of brown Church’s ankle boots bought in 1993 (they still made very good quality shoes back then – in my opinion). They still look really good to this day and they have certainly paid back the money invested.
In my opinion a very good pair of shoes can make a average suit look a lot better..but a average pair of shoes makes one look average (or less than average ) even if it's worn with a good bespoke suit .

The best advice is really to spend all of your money on the best clothes, shoes and accessories that you can afford. After that, what the hell.

That's rather flip. Yialabis and others have posted serious comments, and I appreciate those.

"...supposedly, women pay more attention to a man's shoes than to his shirt or suit..."

In my limited experience, this is certainly the case. At work and play, I have gotten far more compliments from women on my shoes than my suits, shirts, ties, etc. combined. I've also gotten comments from women that nearly all suits look the same to them, but they always spot different shoes. Many women also seem to notice cufflinks and watches.

This is a flip comment. Can you explain yourself.

I agree with all of the other posters who call you on making flip comments.

Jeez.

Men have to be strong and durable. Good shoes add value to this endeavour.
