bespoke mania: attaché
Gentlemen
I am having an attaché done for me soon and I have decided to either have it done in (black or tan) cowhide or in (black or brown) pigskin. Which one of the two would you prefer?
Thanks

Tan cowhide or, next best, brown pigskin. An old Anglo-American convention held that a gentleman should not wear or hold black on or in his hands: silly, groundless, but once something's ingrained from early childhood, the acquired prejudice is difficult to shake -- and I've no need to.

Would it be too silly if it was done with the cow fur side rather than leather side? Would it be too country? And would the fur side last?
thanks
thanks
It would impress me as silly or weakly jocular, but others doubtless would react differently. The hair will remain on cowskin quite a while if tanned properly and not subjected to hard wear.

On this subject, I was even once told off for carrying a case, for the reason that 'a gentleman never carries his own papers'!!Anonymous wrote:Tan cowhide or, next best, brown pigskin. So if you were to choose between Ostrich, cowhide or pigskin what would you gentlemen prefer? I have been caught up in the idea lately of having the attaché made with the hair side of the cow (or horse) or even a suede attaché...
I have read somewhere (maybe esquire encyclopaedia) that it was quite popular back in the golden era of the 30's to carry suede attaches.
Is that the case and if so wouldn't the suede get destroyed easily if carried everyday everywhere?
Thanks

I once had a Cobra skin attache a girl gave me in college (had the hoods laid out as part of the pattern). The inside was lined in suede. Someone else threw it out - probably my wife.
Cool though it was, it wasn't really usable.

How many old suede cases do you see? I've not found it durable.Anonymous wrote:. . . it was quite popular back in the golden era of the 30's to carry suede attaches.

So gentlemen, what would your dream attaché be like? If you could splurge any amount of money on it what would you want it to be like?
If I had any amount of money I'd want to be in a position where I didn't need an attache case.Anonymous wrote:So gentlemen, what would your dream attaché be like? If you could splurge any amount of money on it what would you want it to be like?
I suppose I'd want a shoulder-strapped bag of some kind, more or less like my current one but with more durable hardware and strap attachments.
Or something in carbon fibre.
