Savile Row is easy enough to find, but as previous threads have suggested, far too expensive for most members of this forum, much the tailors on it are admired. Has anyone had any good experience with other tailors in London? Prices? Service?

Desmond Merrion. He lives in Yorkshire but travels to London.

Meyer & Mortimer (aka Jones, Chalk & Dawson), 6 Sackville Street, W1 Tel: 020 7734 3135.
I am having two suits made and should take delivery of the first one in early December. A traditional fiirm, with a "military" rather than a "limp" look.
Price: in the low 2K £ (inc. VAT) for a two piece. Service: a traditional SR house, with a very large choice of cloths, the details you want, nothing fashiony (but I would not know since I never woud ask...), a wonderful old-fashioned shop, bits of uniforms here and there, very attentive service.
This is my first post, so I should offer greetings to all, and ask for you indulgence.

You might also look into Benson & Clegg. They should fit into your price range. Have not used them for suits, but from what I have seen, quality is excellent. The service is really good, too.

I mistakenly took the "low 2K £ (inc. VAT)" comment in another reply to be the original poster's price range. But Benson & Clegg should be around there.

Ed Deboise at Steed is wonderful to work with. He works out of Carlisle and has his name on the door under Scabal at No12.

For a serious drop in price consider Chris Kerr, who works in Soho - not far from Savile Row - and who charges close to £1,000 for a genuinely bespoke suit. I've had him make a number of things, and he's always done a great job.

Very interesting. Might you be able to post photographs, address, and telephone number?

Thanks!

Dear RWS

I have just posted the article below (in the Dressing Room Forum) on Soho tailors from a Sunday Newspaper supplement from April 2007, Eddie and Chris Kerr are mentioned in it.

Thanks, Alderbaran. Chris Kerr's work looks good (of course, every website shows good-appearing work!). Is it fully canvassed, handstitched at the lapel and armscye, etc.?

With thanks,

I met Chris Kerr just a week or so ago and decided to invest in a two-piece suit after careful review of his work. What I saw was excellent and, although the jacket handed to me for examination did belong to Matt Lucas, my impression of Chris is that every garment would receive the same care and attention.

Certainly everything that could be seen was handstitched and the feel of the jacket gave the impression of it having a floating canvas.

I spent a few days in London visiting tailors and Chris's work was certainly as good as anything viewed on Savile Row.

I will happily post some pictures following my first fitting.

Thanks, JR. I've no idea who Matt Lucas is and therefore will be keen to see photographs of the work on your suit.

By the way, that's not me pointing out Matt Lucas.

Hmmm . . . . I look nothing like this fellow Lucas but would expect that his tailor's expertise extends beyond those bounds -- or needn't extend as far.
