It's an important, dressy occassion. Evening. A diplomatic reception. A partners' meeting to look you over. An elegant, upscale dinner with new business associates. A glossy charity event. You get the idea....

You want to look your absolute, most elegant best. What suit in your closet do you go to? And what do you pair it with?

This is really a question to uncover your best, favorite 'dress up' suit.

Which is it and why?

I completely agreee with a navy birdseye or pinpoint 12/13 oz Db, but in my opinion the suit should be two pieces.
I will never wear a 3 pieces suit in very formal occasions mainly with a DB ; indeed the vaistcoat hides a large portion of the front of a shirt and makes some sort of contrast with the line of the rolled lapels (the latters being the most beautiful parts of a DB jacket).
In order to have a lesser serious look a Macclesfield tie with a blue ground filled with small patterns (e.g. flowers or dots ) seems ideal.A spread collar sea-island cotton white shirt will perfectly complete the whole.

I don't yet own my best lounge suit.

The many ideas I get from LL make it a moving target; the ideal is yet to be realized.

Nevertheless, of the suits I do own my best lounge suit, the one that I reach for when I want to look my best is:

a Kiton MTM, SB.

color: navy blue. This color looks best on me. It is elegant, classici and looks wonderful in the evenings under artificial light. It is the perfect color.

SB. This particular suit is SB and I selected the lightest padding configuration from among Kiton's numerous options. It may be a bit too 'soft' and casual looking for the evenings but again, we are talking about what is currently in our closets, not what we wish to be there. 3 button, roll to 2 1/2. It shows a nice amount of shirt and this is important in the evenings for the contrast.

Shirt: definitely a white, spread collar. Kiton also made me this shirt and it is probably the most suitable that I have. What is nice is the high collar. The white is formal and provides a wonderful contrast with the navy blue. The nice spread collar and tie space work wonderfully and highlight my face nicely. White is good for my complexion and the collar style looks special for the occassion.

Tie. Here is what makes or breaks the outfit. I want a shiny, conservative tie. I usually go for a 2 color diagonal stripe. Perhaps blue/light blue. Or red/blue. There are different options but I want shine. It picks up wonderfully in photos as well. I'll go for the Brioni tie in my closet for tonight which fits the bill nicely. Smaller knot; can't abide the larger knots any longer; throws off the whole understated effect desired.

Shoes: Simple decision. Well shined black toe caps. I need to buy these; don't have a nice pair of black shoes suitable for evening. Probably get the EG 888 model cap toe. Oxfords.

Accessories: All that's needed now is the pocket square and wrist watch. I'm gong to go for a TV fold, white linen square. Simple. The watch: a platinum Patek which I inherited.

That's it. Other than grooming. Shave before going out in the evening. A dash of cologne. Not too much in case we are dining; it interferes with the taste of the food. Hair shampooed and trimmed if too shaggy or dysfunctional.

I'm feeling good. No one would particularly note my dress; understated but decisive and emphatic. Elegant simplicity. The hallmark of a well dressed man.

The women are dressed. You know that they appreciate that you took the time to do so also. You beat out the guy coming in blue jeans and blazer.
