How should the waistband on American style trousers sit; parallel to the ground or higher in back?

Depends on your body shape. If you have a flat stomach (extremely rare) then you can have them look horizintal. If, as is almost always the case, ther is a stomach protrusion of some degree, then you have a choice. You can wear them with suspenders (probably the best solution) which will hold them in place, you can cut them in the middle of the stomach and sinch them in so tightly they will probably kill you, or you can can cut them as they will fall during the day. in other words, most men have a stomach that pushes their waistband down in the front during the day. If cut straight at the top the trouser top will look horizintal for about 2 minutes. After that they wuill fall below the stomach. This, of course, has the effect of also lowering th crutch giving a wad of eccess fabric between you legs. Best to recognize this and cut the trouser tops where they will be during the day. In other words lower at the front.
