Collar Wear

Dear All,

I have a very old but loved corduroy coat that is starting to wear out at the collar. Is there anything that can be done, other than replacing the collar piece with a different kind of cloth?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Dear Arch,

it seems you have the only possible & reasonable answer already :)

Which, poses the question regarding what kind of cloth, unless I can find a reasonable match to the existing?

Dear Arch,

talk to your tailor, or find a matching or contrasting velvet or moleskin? Personally, I would rather not use another corduroy.

I agree, unless I can find a perfect match, which I doubt. Thanks for your comments.

Dear arch,
even if you find exactly the same corduroy, it would look too new and of a different color against the rest of a well worn jacket.
Probably the coat will need elbow patches soon. In that case I would recommend that you use that same suede or even leather for your collar. Also consider that you don't need to replace the whole collar. You could have a folded patch wrapping over just the upper part of the old collar against the neck. There's nothing wrong in showing that you love your coat and want a few more years out of it. And corduroy jackets are particularly friendly and forgiving when it comes to mending.

Yes, that might be quite successful. I have seen similar things on old tweed coats.
