How to tell the quality of wool with touch

Pardon me if this has been done before. A search failed to to yield anything.

So, how do we tell the quality of wool/fabrics with touch? That would be more helpful, me thinks, than by just identifying cloths to buy based on fabric labels and their weavers.

Michael - lovely Gun Club your holding in the thread you linked to. Do you recall the fabric? It reminds me of something I saw at W. Bill.
