In Alan Flusser's second book Clothes and the Man, there is a wonderful photo of Adolphe Menjou and standing next to his footwear wardrobe.

My question is, has anyone seen any different photos of Mr. Menjou's closet?

15 overcoats doesn't seem particularly excessive... Or perhaps I've developed some sort of a COW (compulsive overcoat wearing) syndrome.

It is certainly not excessive for England but Adolphe Menjou spent most of his life in Hollywood... Perhaps our Californian members could comment?

Actually the ratio of 0.15 overcoats per suit seems pretty low, even for LA weather, for a gentleman whose autobiography is entitled It took nine tailors.

I think it depends on the living habits of the wearer; whether one commutes by his own feet, public transportation or drives a car. I spent four winters in Berlin with only two. One, rough, for tough wearing, all-arounder. The other, finer, for events and formal occasions. They never failed me and still work very well. I would gladly have one or two more. But, IMO, more than ten would be overkill.

Gentlemen
I have not had the pleasure yet as to read Mr. A. Flusser's book, but what I have seen of A.Menjue on the silver screen he strikes me as the most dapper & sophisticated actor that in my humble opinion was truly the grandest of the whole bunch. The way he carried himself, his diction, his DB zoot suits, his demeanor was as
suave as you can get & see. I think he was the best of the best, included in this (my list) were Fred Astair, Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, George Saunders etc. He exuded and radiated real sophistication, something that has been sadly lost & forgotten today.

Did you really mean zoot suit? I doubt Mr. Menjou ever wore one of those.

Oh yes. He had Zoot suits from Kilgour. He loved them.

Gentlemen
Since we are on this great site about Gentlemen, Sophistication, Clothes & Style; my apologies I forgot to state that this has been lost today not only with the silver screen (want to be) actors today; but simply in our daily personal life style. I bemoan where o' where has the personal good taste gone too by the masses. In my opinion we for the most part have turned our backs on good civilized taste, to the trash that has invaded TV land and the movies. What will become of us as a civilized society when we let our children go to school like
"bums or hobo's". They dress like pure garbage or crap, this will foster itself as lack of self esteem in the short & long term in their personal life & in our social economic weave affecting everyone. Where has the everyday suit gone to, where is the gentlemens hat, where is the decent pair of shined shoes, combed hair, shirt & tie etc, etc etc. I for one do not aspire or want to live like them. I will wear my clothes with pride and act with self respect in all that I can do. Sorry to have belabored my opinion but I just hate seeing the youth self destruct taking the rest of the lazy & careless masses with them. As Alfred Hitchcock would say..Good Evening!

Although nowadays I´m almost sure that Kilgour would oblige. Have you seen their skinny suits pin-dotted all over?

They used to be so great. Sad times we live in.

Dear JIMD,
I see no need for an apology when you have expressed your opinion in an elegant and substantiated manner. That is precisely what the LL is all about.
But you threw me off with your comment regarding Mr. Menjou wearing zoot suits.
