I just found a fabulous resource, called Tiecrafters in New York City. They're experts at cleaning, widening and narrowing ties. Their website is tiecrafters.com and I've listed the rest of their contact information at the bottom of this post.

They've been around for decades, but I'd not heard of them until recently. Instead of spending $150-200 on a new tie, I gave them two of my favorites to narrow (at $19.50 a piece) as a "test," since as all you dapper gents know, tie styles have narrowed in recent years.

They did an amazing job. (The owner, Andy, said that they've literally cleaned and altered millions of ties, so they have it down to a science.) The work is all done by hand, so you'd never know that they'd been altered. And the final pressing is an art form unto itself--a very gentle process so the fabric doesn't flatten or pick up a shine. I was so blown away by the work that I dropped off another six ties on the spot. And you won't have to wait long for them to perform their magic: allow two weeks for the work and they'll ship anywhere.

I can second your endorsement. I had them make me a couple bow ties from the same grosgrain as my dinner suit's facings. They did a good job, especially since I had a couple different bow tie shapes in mind and they executed them well.

Great service and quality. Hermes in Manhattan use them for repairs, so no higher recommendation than that.

Some of myRTW "XL" ties are a little too long for a four-in-hand knot-- I've salvaged the ones I liked best by sending them to Tiecrafters. Snip, snip. Excellent work.
