Any opinions on these please? Is there an equivalent that is not so heavy?

Persol are favored by some.

The mid brown tortoise resin is great on the wayfarers, they don't look as heavy as the black. DDM

Although Wayfarers are worn by almost everybody nowadays, they still are one of my all time favorite. Best in mid brown tortoise as DD advised.
You can have them with brown or smoke crystals. They may look a bit too much cool with a blue or charcoal bespoke suit but I´m sure you can pull it off.
Big drawback: their height cannot be adjusted with nose pads like the Aviator or other models; the frame is just one piece and sits directly on the nose bridge.

I really would encourage you to take a look at Persol model 649.

Much rarer than the RayBan, they come in a variety of frame/lens colours, and have the advantage of a variety of frame sizes, so you can get a really good fit.

i have three pairs, black, mid-tortoise and the rarer blond tortoise. all three of them are old, and i think these vintages are much better. they are build from more solid materials, have much better (bausch and lomb) lenses, and none of that unfortunate branding that's all over these glasses nowadays.

a wayfarer can be somewhat adjusted to fit your head with the application of heat. you can do it yourself, gently warm them with a blow-dryer and carefully bend them, or you can let a professional do it for you.

I think that is one of the charms of wearing RayBan wayfarers. When you are wearing Persol, it´s soooo obvious you mean to wear Persol. When you are wearing the RB wayfarers you´re just wearing functional, almost generic, sunglasses of excellent quality and looks. The focus in on you and not on the sunglasses.

In my experience, most people have never heard of Persol. Rayban is not far from being as generic as Hoover.

Yes, I think I got your point.
In my case, I believe "generic" wayfarers interpret my style better.

The number of pairs of Raybans that I have: left behind in bars, on trains and in cabs; sat on, and even given away, means that I now just buy cheap pairs these days; especially since Raybans over here are about five times the price of over there.

There's also the bit about why you wear sunnies in the first place, ie to protect your eyes from the harsh sun. I've got loads of RayBans, and they have been my go to in the case of bright sunlight for years. But I actually think the Persol lenses do a better job (sad bit here, Persol comes from the Italian "per il sole"). I confess to being left handed as well!
