By chance I've just stumbled across this. I wonder if Mr Herring will be offering them in black?

How do you cope with the fact that you can't try them on?Man at C&A wrote:I'm a big fan of Herrings

I discovered Herrings during a long weekend break to Kingsbridge where they have a shop. However the second pair I purchased was, I admit, an act of faith coupled with a willingness to queue in the post office had I got things wrong.Edward Bainbridge wrote:How do you cope with the fact that you can't try them on?Man at C&A wrote:I'm a big fan of Herrings

"...I think a bit too inexpensive for special occasions... New & Lingwood do a similar but very nice looking model."
I might be about to utter an unutterably awful opinion, but, if either alternative were well worn in and polished, would there be that great a difference? After all, most of the boot is hidden by the trousers. I think the only differences that I, as a reasonably interested observer, would notice is in the shape of the toe, and in the lack of a line of brogueing across the cap. I don't recall N&L shoes having a radically different last.
The most important question, really, is between shoes or boots; is the opinion on this board that boots look better, but shoes are more comfortable?

I'd still go for boots at Ascot, but for a typical non-posho wedding I doubt if 99% of the guests would notice if I was in boots or shoes or snorkling flippers. To be honest if nobody turns up to our do in Nikes I'd consider it a result.YoungLawyer wrote:"The most important question, really, is between shoes or boots; is the opinion on this board that boots look better, but shoes are more comfortable?
FWIW - we went into town by tube last night and shared a carriage with a trio in black tie. One had managed polished black lace-ups but had ruined it with a pink tie. One of his friends was in brown brogues and the third in... God help us... Camper casual shoes
