...the best season for meandering, wandering about your town while dressing very practically: to keep warm.

No sprezzatura needed... no forethought required...it just usually turns out right whatever you wear.

In Fall, we get to go well beyond the... 4 conundrums, as I call them : coat, shirt, tie, pochette, and enjoy added vests, pullovers, scarves, overcoats, hats, gloves and on....
Somehow the need for warmth trumps other considerations and I think that men somehow have a more instinctive sense for Fall dressing.

(btw, here's a nice article on flanerie in Paris:

I am glad at this time of year that I had my Fall sports coats cut 1/2 size bigger than Summer coats because I can fit a single ply pullover underneath; and that is a pleasure which allows me to postpone wearing an overcoat until as long as the season permits.

With a pullover, hat, gloves and scarf plus a wool sports coat, I can pretty much keep day dreaming and doddering along through most of Fall and usually into Winter.

I've found single ply pullovers to be a great addition and investment for wearing under a sports coat, or indeed suit. I've started collecting a few William Lockie pullovers over the past seasons and can recommend them.

Reasonable prices, high quality, wonderful colors and good on-line customer service.

And nothing is really nicer than wearing a comforting pullover at home on a drab evening preparing to battle the dark.

uppercase,
I'm with you completely. This is my favorite season and October my favorite month. The fall clothes add all the more measure to autumn cheer.

Fall pretty much refused to arrive in S Italy this year. Beach weather in late October.

I look forward to Fall. (As far as flanerie is concerned, forget the cafes and go to the outdoor markets in Paris. They are chock full of goodies...mushrooms, game, oysters. Open up them pearly gates..!)

The 1 ply pullovers are a great tip UC. And Lockie is pretty much in a class of its own. My coats are cut large to accommodate both the pullovers and Fall gastronomy. :?

Cheers

Same here in Northern California. No real cool weather just yet, but a slightly less warm continuation of summer. I'll be toting some tweeds and flannels to London in a couple of weeks, for a visit. Might be my first chance to wear fall clothing.
