Here in Northern California, it is quite common to be asked to remove one's shoes when entering someone's home. We, for instance, provide a selection of hotel-type slippers for our guests and we do let guests know in advance that we are a no-shoe home. Indeed, it's so common here that service people carry shoe-covers with them when making a house call.
