I am afraid I do not know anything about the technical background of your problem, but how about this photo of Richard E. Grant wearing the type of coat you mentioned:
Thank you J. S. Groot.Well done!
Having done a little research on this ; that is their 2010 model.
The coat for the current winter is very similar brown with a slightly shorter nap, made from alpaca.
For some reason I don't understand for a 6ft middle aged man, I am intrigued by this coat and also the current model.
I am wondering is this fashion? is it smart? does it look ridiculous?
It does look pretty good on Mr. Grant.
would it have any place in an ordinary mans wardrobe?

So the way I'm understanding you is that you're asking a question along the lines of: "Do I really like it, or is it just a whim that'll pass after a season?" I think it is a question that occurs to everyone. At least, I often find my self thinking about that very question. What I try to do is... well, I think the best way of putting it is that I try to dress with my eyes and my body, meaning that I try to ask myself whether I just like how the item in question looks or if I can actually visualise myself wearing it. For example, I can admire sleek and dramatically shaped shoes from G&G, Cleverley etc. but I know that I could never wear them. In this case, the reason is apparent as the shape of my feet simply do not allow it. But I find that the principle can be applied to less obvious cases. For example, I can look at a loud and colourful paisley pattern on a tie and think that it looks good, but I don't find myself comfortable wearing such a tie. So I don't. Or, I admire a photo of, say, Michael, wearing a dapper fedora, but I know I'd feel odd wearing one myself. So, again, I don't.
In short: If you like how it looks and think you'll wear it then go for it and fie to whether it's fashion, smart or has a place in an ordinary man's wardrobe.
I do hope I'm making sense.

Most of you know that I tend to be a very positive sort, but I have to say that the coat published above as well as the overall look is just Awful. The fellow really needs to wear a leopard skin suit underneath that coat, carry a big ox bone club, and/or cruise in a lowered down yellow Caddy with dingle balls. Mon Dieu!
A rustic, hairy tweed coat or a full fledged fur coat in beaver might be nice as a replacement (for the Super Bowl but not to be worn at the Opera.)
Cheers

J. S Groot thank you for all your help on this, for uploading the picture and for your succinct and very well considered, perfectly judged reply. That was exactly my thinking.
Michael, Thank you so much for your input. I really loved your brutal but frank opinion on this.
It sometimes takes someone else to be able to see the wood for the trees.
I have to say the current years model is not quite so bad, (which I still haven't worked out how to post). It is more like beaver, less shaggy etc.
Thank you again for your wonderfully fresh comments!
