Grey suit/jacket

As I am only slowly able to build up a wardrobe I have the tendency to think up a summer suit of which the jacket can be worn separately. I know this can be done easily with a dark blue cloth and some patch pockets. But what about grey? There are some interesting posts on ASW that champion the grey jacket for summer as an alternative to blue and tan and to linen. Has anyone ever tried a light grey or maybe mid grey odd jacket for summer? Did it work?
