Fox paragon umbrella
is this frame a men's or women's umbrella? I've found a 1912 fox paragon umbrella, 35in long, with a straight but fairly (not very) thin handle to look like bamboo, with a silver tip. Men's or women's?
With the exception of large sports umbrellas ,straight handles generally represent a typical feature of women's umbrellas.
I think it is a women's umbrella.

“The very nature of the umbrella has prevented any drastic changes in styling. The umbrella handle, however, has managed to display considerable variety: handles have been fashioned of rosewood, Malacca, bamboo, silver, gold, various kinds of horn, and plastic. The so-called crooked handle has been dominant through the years, but some men have shown a preference for straight handle set at a right angle to the shaft of the umbrella, while others have favored a short handle with a knob. A staple feature has been an ornamental metal stud, usually set at the base of the handle.”
I am myself unsure as to gender of the umbrella depicted above, but the presence of a straight handle seems not to settle the question. I suggest the anonymous inquirer should send an e-mail to Fox, and share with us the reply afterwards.

Based only on the proportions but no particular knowledge, that looks like a man's umbrella.
Is 3/4" the cane or the silver? Finally, please measure the diameter of the open canopy.

that's the cane at the handle. The silver is 1 1/4".
The Canopy fabric is 35" measured from the spokes, and 30 1/2 at the narrowest point of the fabric half way between the spokes.

Modern Fox gents' umbrellas are on a 25" frame and have a canopy of 37.5" diameter, Your umbrella has a diameter of 44". This, combined with the type of cane on the shaft (thick - not thin partridge cane) and the length (35") all point to its being a gent's umbrella and very fine it looks too.Anonymous wrote:no opinions?!? The radius of the silk is 22in.
