Dear Members of the LL

What would be the necktie of your choice for a shirt like this (without buttom down collar and without a logo)?

Would you restrict it for evening wear?

Evening? Certainly not.
To be honest I would rather wear an ascot with it, to minimize the area of contact between the patterns - and I would probably choose the shirt in a colour other than gray, possibly leave the collar buttons in place. If I had to wear a tie to it, it would be a solid colour, perhaps a grenadine.

I agree with Costi , I would keep this shirt to wear during the weekend probably with an ascot during a walk in my grandfathers village in northern Peloponnese . I wouldn't wear a tie with it, but in case u have to... solid coloured ties are always safer with cheques.

kind regards

You could wear a solid-colored knitted silk tie, I suppose, though they don't knot well and droop. In ascending order, don't even think about fancy bow-ties (too Elmer Fudd), solid satins are too showbiz for the shirt in question, grenadines are better because of their texture and tonality.
Best of all would be to leave the shirt collar undone and add a colorful silk scarf from Hermes, folded and artfully knotted. Once upon a time Hermes published a promotional pamphlet that pictured numerous ways to knot a scarf in step-by-step snaps and diagrams. If still available, add it to your collection of reference books. Add a tweed odd jacket, flannels and suede shoes, then head for the country.

I agree with the rest, with buttoned-down collar shirts the best is not to wear a tie but an ascot or scarf. If you wear a tie over it, I would use a solid grenadine in a light colour (to contrast the dark grey pattern), and probably wearing a sweater on top to balance the contrast between the shirt and tie.

If I recall correctly, I remember seeing illustrations of similarly small checked shirts in AA/Esky worn with doubloon dotted ties. Might be worth a thought.

It could work if they were not too closely spaced.

Dots work with check shirts as well as large paisleys, the trick being to get a contrast between the "grid" size of the check and the "grid size" of the tie design. Personally, I favor larger grids for the ties which in the case of the dot could be a larger dot or a dot more widely spaced (which is what I prefer). My problem with the shirt is that the color of the check is very dark and would make the whole thing a bit somber.

Gentlemen:

I wear a wool red large paisley Robert Talbott tie with a similar - albeit a little more dressy (point collar gingham or tattersall). It seemingly works. A dark solid knit tie would also work. An ascot is likely best though.
