I had made, quite some time ago, a two piece suit (navy chalkstripe SB, 3 button front, 4 button cuff) and wished for some time that I had a waistcoat made too. I have recently found a jacket, a few sizes to big for me, that is of an identical material.

What I want to know is, will it be possible to turn the jacket I've found into a waistcoat and does anyone have any ideas of anyone who would be up for the task and how much it would cost?

Thank you in advance.

I just held the back of the sport coat I am wearing today to my chest and it appears that the two back panels of the coat, which is not any too big for me, would provide more than sufficient material for the front panels of a vest. The rest of the coat would provide far more than enough clear material for such things as pocket welts/flaps and lapels. The lining of the coat back would make a lining for the vest front, and all that would have to be purchased new is a striped or patterned silk or bemberg to my liking for the back and back strap of the vest. I assume any competent tailor/vest maker would take on such a task. What a good idea, except for the fact that I really like the sport coat and would hate to cut it apart.

you just need to find a tailor willing to the job.

But as you went bespoke on the suit, why on earth not ask the original tailor to do it for you? He might suck his teeth about the source of the extra cloth but it's noneof his business!!

Do be careful that the cloth isn't more or less well maintained on the second coat, otherwise the whole thing may look a little off..
