I am about to invest in a good winter cashmere coat. I have noticed there are various weights. Which is better quality? A heavy or a light weight cashmere fabric?

I think it's better to go for something heavier - cashmere is fairly light anyway and feels wonderfully sumptious when in a heavier weight (it should also be slightly more durable). I like overcoats to be fairly unstructured as the weight of the cloth tends to be enough. I'm especially fond of the double-breasted sort at the moment to wear on particularly cold, dry days in winter.
