I am at the stage of needing a new watch and have been thinking of Patek Philippe really seriously. However, I don’t know which watch to buy from their collection. I am really not bothered about the price too much. Any suggestions?

I'd focus more on the style of watch rather than the brand - provided the quality is decent.

Said another way, I wouldn't get a Patek (and pay the name premium) just to get a Patek.

I love Patek watches and for a special watch would never look anywhere else.

They have style, great build quality and to my mind their understated elegance outshines all others.

Do not be put off by the price.

My finest wristwatch is a Patek. I am soothed by its solidity, simplicity of design, and flawless operation, and by its emotional connections (a family gift, long ago).

Were I to choose a wristwatch for myself today, I might consider not only Patek but, also, Vacheron & Constantin, Breguet, and the finest old American makers, early- and mid-twentieth-century Hamilton and Waltham among them.

I'd listed makers I respect for quality of manufacture and for overall aesthetics. I have some objective knowledge of the first criterion as a former amateur horologist; but the second is a very personal criterion, and I wouldn't presume to prescribe my own aesthetics for another man.

My favourite model Rolex (and the one I wear) is a new Daytona. Solid, reliable, excellent feel and comfort on the wrist; it also has a great history behind it. If you like that sort of thing. Check out the Daytona Paul Newman if you get an oppotunity.

Another favourite of mine but one which is very rare is the classic Panerai Tourbillon.

Go to a good watch store take a look.

While it's nice to know who has the absolute best finishing, there's very little difference between top brands that can be appreciated by someone who doesn't know a whole lot about watches.

I'd be guided much more by looks than by second-hand knowledge of subtle differences between movements.
