Bretagne trousers
Boyer writes about red Bretagne trousers made of cotton, which he thinks go well with a blazer. Does anybody know, which mill produces this kind of cloth? BTW, what do think about such bold trousers?
You might contact this supplier of sailcloth trousers from Brittany:

and inquire about their source, though Alden may have more direct info on mills.
As for their place in the sartorial ecology, they are none other than the infamous Nantucket Reds. See:

The writer describes the original fabric as Brittany cloth, but made with a made-to-fade dye. In the U.S., I suspect, whether you wore a slightly less faded Breton version or beaters from Murray's with many summers on them, you'd be invoking all the associations of the New England standby, for better or worse, as you choose.
In Europe they may still be sportif but less iconic, and thus potentially more versatile.

In more traditional circles in New England, they're now regarded as a bit of an affectation. But if you like them, go ahead and wear them!
