I am curious about the circumstances that make the need to identify the source of a Balzac quotation urgent.

As indicated by Alden, the quotations are from Balzacs "Traité de la vie élégante." The book was first published in "La mode" in 1830; a reprint from 2000 can be bought here:

I am not aware whether the book has been translated into English.
