Is only me that find that the odd jacket should be darker than the odd trousers? Does anybody have examples of the opposite combination working well: light jacket, dark trousers?

Recently, I saw this list of pitfalls written by a tailor in 1915:

Never wear:

1) a shirt with colors together with a frock coat
2) dark trousers together with a light jacket
3) turn down collar with a tailcoat
4) boots at evening parties
5) brown shoes together with anything but a lounge jacket or a light morning coat

Definitely, a light sports coat can work well with dark trousers.

A refreshing change from the dark coat/lighter trousers combination!

Infact, it is to be preferred but very few actually buy or own light sports coats. A pity, really.

A camel or tan based jacket with oxford gray trousers is classic. For that matter, the Alden GunClub with gray trousers is much the same. Far better than the ubiquitous blue blazer and tan trousers that is our American Dilbert uniform of conformity.

Let's also add the observation that it's not longer 1915 and that the last time there was any cultural adoption of the frock coat was by a subculture of mods near carnaby street some 40 years ago.

In 1915 the white dinner jacket wasn't invented yet. And a white dinner jacket with black or midnight blue trousers can be striking.
But light sportcoats can work well with darker trousers, too, but it's not that easy. I failed trying it.

What I think is interesting, is the mention of 5) Brown shoes together with anything but a lounge jacket or a light morning coat.

Mid - light grey lounge suits with brown shows look wonderful, so should a morning coat (in terms of colour), but is it appropriate?
