What is ancient madder?

One of the softest silk fabrics available, the name is taken from the ancient plant of the same name, whose roots were used to make dark red dye before the 19th century. In the modern era, the rich tonal “ancient madder” dye colors are mostly made synthetically, with the addition of metallic salts. The madder dyes are given an indigo bath, producing a final dye unusually rich and deep in color. Along with the somber tones and matte surface of ancient madder, the fabric also has a tactile, almost velvety hand unlike any other silk. Weighty and substantial, ancient madder ties allow for a perfectly dimpled knot.

I have an ancient madder tie from the Flusser shop, it has a soft almost gummy velvet feel to it.
