Re: Such snuff as dreams are made on

St Tully - as you say, the choices are incredible - from high dry toast types to snuffs such as Fribourg & Treyer's Old Paris. I suggest that you go to Smith's Cigar Shop in Charing Cross Road and consult. I am not sure whether they have samples but the tins are quite small and inexpensive. Smith's...

I would second the vote for Roderick Charles. They are more narrowly cut than T and A and are better priced. I buy several pairs a year during the sale.

There are so many regimental and school ties in Britain that the differences between many of them is often slight. If the stripes go in the opposite direction it can hardly be described as the official tie. However as most British stripes go in the same direction such a reversed tie is likely to be ...

I think the point is that the covert coat, which was originally associated with the country, and then subsequently with the racetrack, became an acceptable style of informal wear in the City by the 1930s. (Indeed, see Tutee's wonderful illustrations.) It is still a racy, somewhat rakish look--and n...

Sorry to disagree, but the covert coat has been around for more than a decade. In the late '60's and early '70's we were making a lot of them. All with the traditional stitching around the cuff and bottom of the coat. And people wore them with bowler's, too. Leonard You are right, of course. I am s...

The covert coat was originally a country coat and in the UK remains so. Its typical habitat is the racecourse. It was also popular with works foremen and others employed out of doors in a supervisory (standing and watching) capacity. The brown ones were not really seen in the city until a decade or...

I would suggest that removing the hat has always been a sign of respect in Christian cultures. In 1 Corinthians 11.7 Paul says it is not right for a man to have his head covered. The hat is always removed in church and by extension out of politeness in other contexts and circumstances. Tipping the ...

Winfield was (is?) the own-brand label of Woolworth's. It was the middle name of the founder Frank Winfield Woolworth.

You might not want to admit to owning anything with that label, although I seem to remember the quality was acceptable given what little you paid.

Finsbury

I was told at Finsbury in Paris that their Richelieux line is made by Grenson "to an Italian design". I have the Diplomat and am very satisfied. It's less than a 'Masterpiece' but very good value and adds variety to my collection.

Re: Reccomended Cobblers in London

Gentlemen, Would you be so kind as to leave details of recommended London cobblers in this post. Please also indicate if repairs of shoes made by other shoemakers are undertaken. Thank you I think the lack of replies to your question probably reflects how few proper cobblers (as opposed to heel bar...

How's the English bar at the Athenee Palace? To tell you the truth, I never went in  I have my hair cut at the Athenee Palace - but that's on the other side of the building. I dined there a few times (nothing memorable), but never visited the bar (not much of a drinker, either). When did you v...

I must agree with Dorian. I was surprised to find out CT has its shirts manufactured in Turkey at a factory that works for a few other less renowned (Italian) names. There happens to be an outlet in Bucharest selling this factory's production (all originals). . I have a CT shirt bought in London wh...
