Re: Does anyone else leave the bottom vest button done up?
His Royal Highness sometimes likes to make an extra point! http://theblacktieblog.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/1999_corbis_palace_garden_party_1999.jpg?w=321&h=300 No, it is not a mistake, as we see here: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/06/21/article-2664440-1EFDF3A800000578-744_964x665.jpg I'm n...

Re: Does anyone else leave the bottom vest button done up?
Everyone ia entitled to their opinions, I suppose , but an opinion such as the one expressed below... ...when I see someone with the bottom button of their (regular) waistcoat done up I do not see a sharply individual dresser. I see Someone Who Doesn't Know. ...seems at odds with the historical and...

Re: Does anyone else leave the bottom vest button done up?
Of course, each to his own. And, naturally, formal evening and double-breasted waistcoats always have all buttons done up. But I must admit, when I see someone with the bottom button of their (regular) waistcoat done up I do not see a sharply individual dresser. I see Someone Who Doesn't Know. Savil...

Re: Where to buy a hat
I agree a fedora or trilby would be a very versatile hat. Also worth considering is a tweed or balmoral cap. It should be nice and warm and perfectly suitable in most parts of Oxford from going down the pub to a visit to the Ashmolean, and fine with jacket and tie or with jeans and Barbour. Lock's a...

Re: Galosh tops
I have just watched the video again and I am pretty sure the boots as displayed in the exhibition in their original design are four (that is, eight) lace tabs shorter than the boots as now offered ready made. I wonder why? It seems to me that the 'improvements' made for the retail market are not an ...

Re: Galosh tops
Dear Hectorm, What a wonderful video! I could smell the shoes as I watched it, which I did several times. Seeing the Moscow Balmorals alongside other shoes and real people, they actually don't seem (to me) so high in the ankle after all. The Cyrillic embossed initials are very large indeed, though, ...

Re: Galosh tops
Dear Russell, You put your case persuasively, and your pointing out the boots' defects I must reluctantly admit has made me begin to love these boots less. I have fought this disloyalty hard and I cannot say I haven't suffered. I must nevertheless agree that the boots would be better for being short...

Re: Galosh tops
Dear Russell, I know exactly what you mean about the plus twos, and with a more sturdy shoe area that would be the solution. But these are definitely town shoes, or at any rate not for the countryside. However, I disagree that ankle boots are out of place in the city. Galosh tops and ankle boots hav...

Re: Coat advice, please.
I would still go with Cordings. This one in fact:

Re: Galosh tops
Thank you Hectorm, I agree! I had not thought of Cairn tweed. And perhaps some other tweeds as well? What do you think about matching them with a suit in Cordings "Sporting Tweed"? http://www.cordings.co.uk/media/catalog/category/JK513ALLXXa-copy_1.jpg I am also thinking they would look well with gr...

Galosh tops
I love the look of these boots, available ready made from John Lobb, but where would one wear them? The same boots with grey suede ankles would be perfect with morning dress (maybe better with buttoned galosh tops instead of laces—but so fiddly!), but I think brown ankles with MD would look a bit od...

Re: Shoes with white, or off white, linen suit
With an off-white linen suit I have worn chestnut oxfords, brown derbys, beige suede oxford brogues and recently a beautiful pair of cream and maple brown shaded leather "1953" horsebit Gucci loafers. No, seriously, it's a comfortable and elegant shoe, perfect for hot summers in Mediterranean climat...
